M.I.A rails against "Paper Planes" video censorship

mia.gifHey, guess what! M.I.A is annoyed at something! Yep, despite being the critics' darling, ending up near the top of most end of year lists, and attaining the kind of success Stateside most artists would kill for, don't think she's going to stop fighting the... well, the world, pretty much.

Her latest blog entry on MySpace, as reported by Drowned In Sound, rails against MTV and / or unidentified individuals who have "sabotaged" her latest video. See, the thing with her "Paper Planes" track is that, while it's a delightful track with a lot of crossover appeal, it also uses gunshots in the chorus. Uses them very well, if you ask me, alongside the ring of a cash register. See what she did there?

Well, MTV don't like it.

Neither do Letterman's producers. The result being that M.I.A finds herself censored all over the shop. Not that surprising really, given that MTV won't allow the words "ass" or "God" to air these days without censorship. Bit of a shame though, since any censorship of the gunshot sound immediately strips the tune of its dynamism.

As a Christmas present to M.I.A, we're going to post the uncensored version here and not even link to the the censored one. Maybe that'll cheer her up a bit. Um, I do this on the proviso that no readers take this as green light to go and shoot anyone. Be nice.

Should MTV play the "Paper Planes" video uncensored? Vote on our poll over at Polls Boutique.
