Can You Gig It?: NME Awards Big Gig @ London's O2, 28.2.08

nmeawards.gifKat from Tech Digest almost warrants her own regular column here on My Chemical Toilet, so many gigs does she attend and report back on. Last night she went to the post-NME Awards live show, which featured sets from Kaiser Chiefs, The Cribs, Bloc Party, Klaxons and - most importantly for her - Manic Street Preachers.

- How did you rate the venue? The O2 arena is brilliant, and, at just 10 minutes away from London Bridge, surprisingly easy to get to. Having said that, the sound was horrible last night for the NME Awards Big Gig, with even one of the 12 year-olds in The Cribs commenting on how shocking it was. Bet they've never even owned a tape deck. (Um, fairly sure The Cribs are all older than you actually, Kat - Ed)

- What were the crowd like? I'm in my early 20s, but even I felt old attending this gig - when exiting North Greenwich tube station, most gig-goers in front of me had 'child' tickets, and boy, did they act like it. I have never had so much beer flung over me, or glowsticks pelted at me from above. The mosh pit looked fierce though, I was quite envious of the yoof and their energy...

- Was the support act any good or did it send you to the bar? Well, there was no 'official' support act, with all five bands having won awards or something at the NME awards. Probably. I didn't watch the actual awards ceremony bit. I must admit though, when the Kaiser Chiefs came on, I sat in the hallway outside the toilets for most of their set, sending emails on my mobile. I hate them and all their sausage legs squeezed into skinny Topshop jeans.

- Bar - rip-off or value for money? It was fairly decent, for a London venue. Can't complain too much!

Venue staff - nice or nasty?
They're absolutely adorable. The O2 venue staff are so kind and helpful, it really makes you want to go back time and time again.

- Toilets - swilling with piss, or spick and span? The toilets are some of the cleanest I've ever seen, certainly for a music venue. Nice scented liquid soap, too.

- Highlight/lowlight of show? Getting beer thrown down at us from above was a definite low, as was the entire Kaiser Chiefs' set. The highlight was what I went for - the Manic Street Preachers' set at the end. I loved their cover of Rihanna's Umbrella, and Nicky Wire once again getting his legs out and strutting his stuff. The glitter at the end was a nice touch, too.

- Any other comments? I am refusing to go to any more gigs where I fear 16 year-olds might be. Expect to see me at Cliff Richard' next London show.

!!!
Is there something wrong with you? Getting beer and glowsticks thrown at you, what the hell were you expecting at an NME gig?! Get over it.
The sound was fine from where I was standing (front row), and Kaiser Chiefs were the best band of the night. Go and aquire some taste.

How can you say that Kaiser Chiefs set was a low point if you were out in the corridor not even watching!? They really got the crowd going but obviously you weren't there to winess that!!!
Rude!
