Muxtape: because we still refuse to believe mixtapes are dead
Muxtape is the latest attempt by the 21st century to try and recall that quintessentially 20th century artifact, the mixtape (or at least the nostalgic aesthetics attached to it). We've had USB sticks in tape-like packaging, and now we have a site that allows you to upload tracks to create your own, er, "muxtape".
Is it that different from something like Finetune, which allows you to create streaming playlists from a huge database of tracks? Well, the very fact that you can upload your own stuff makes it different. As does the fact that the playlists seem to be limited to 12 songs - which is a lot fewer than any mixtape I ever made, and, to be honest, makes me wonder if the effort of uploading tracks is totally worth it.
In these days of Last.fm and The Hype Machine, and numerous other ways to create and share playlists, my instinct is that Muxtape seems a little gimmicky. But I can also see the site being a useful way to share tracks that can't be readily found online - as long as you can be bothered sitting there uploading track after track. That's what has prevented me creating a playlist yet, I got work to do, innit.
Anyway, loads of folk have gone and created their own playlists, so you can go and check them out for yourself before creating your own here. One good thing - you're virtually guaranteed not to have DJs' voices coming in and spoiling the end of every track, like in the olden days.
