2007 Festival Losers: Mika, Panic At The Disco and the environment

It’s nearly time to put your sleeping bag and tent back in the garage for another winter. 2007 festival season is all but done, so who’s left with egg on their face? Here’s a round up of 2007’s festival losers.
- Whoever came up with the idea of giving away left-behind Glastonbury tents to charitable causes. Weeks later they were still languishing on site.
- Fflam – defeated by the lack of summer weather.
- Live Earth. There may have been hundreds of megawatt names and billions of people watching worldwide, but does that many TVs help the environment? Not to mention the carbon footprints of all those private jets.
- T In The Park having to turn some people away. The weather / crowds / poor organisation were all blamed.
- Glasto organiser Michael Eavis upsetting the majority of his ticket buyers. Whoops.
- Guilfest’s safety preparations… or lack of.
- Mika’s last minute pull-out from The Big Chill.
- The inaugural Redbourn Festival. Badly organised and poorly attended, apparently.
- Field Day. 5000 festival goers, 24 toilets. Yum.
- Fugiya and Miyagi at Loop – but then again, how do you anticipate audience members who wish to fly?
- V Festival-goers – left unfulfilled after Amy Winehouse pulled out at the last minute.
- Pete Doherty and Babyshambles once again failing to grasp that turning up on time does wonders to please festival crowds.
- Serial bottlees Panic At The Disco – who once again got bottled at Reading.
- Reading sound technicians. Several artists complained of sound problems.
- Lily Allen at the Notting Hill Carnival. Stage invasions are so not a good look if it almost gets you sued.
- The Burning Man, of Burning Man Festival fame, who was set aflame early by a suspected arsonist.
- M.I.A. at Connect. If you invite the entire crowd to join you on stage, they will take you up on it and organisers will cut your set short.
- Human League at Retrofest – less nostalgia, more political agenda.
- Beastie Boys at Bestival. Despite midgets, energy and some inspiring performances in the UK this summer; this attendee wasn’t impressed.
- This year’s festival death count. Four separate incidents, all invstigated by police but all ruling out foul play. Still, the news marred Glastonbury, Knowsley Hall, Reading and the Electric Picnic.
And that’s your lot. Let me know if I’ve overlooked one of your lowlights.
